ERIC GLASS

March 22, 1957 - May 31, 2024

Peacefully on the morning of May 31, at the age of 67, Eric passed away at home, with his loving wife by his side.
He was predeceased by his son Chris; his parents, Vern and Gerry Glass; and his father-in-law Bill Carlow. Leaving to cherish many fond memories are his wife Cindy; daughter Jenna; son-in-law Dave; brothers, Bob (Trish) and Steve (Dawn); nephews, Kyle (Melainee) and Troy; sisters-in-law, Debbie and Wendy (Dale); nieces, Kristen (Josh) and Lindsay; and mother-in-law Doreen Carlow; in addition to a countless number of honorary family members and friends.
Eric and Cindy met in elementary school. The day that Cindy showed up in a ruffled yellow dress, she had him wrapped around his finger, where he stayed for the rest of his life. They were married at 20 years old and built a beautiful life together, eventually settling in Oak Bluff. Ever the social butterfly, Eric became involved in countless community events and activities where many significant and lifelong friendships formed. He was a dedicated family man who always put his family first.
Despite being terrified of heights, Eric shared his dad’s love for airplanes and flying. He obtained his pilot’s license and enjoyed taking family and friends around in his little Cessna plane. If there was an airshow nearby, Eric would surely be there, and most likely in the beer gardens. He also spent 30 years working as an air traffic controller, where he worked under pressure with grace and ease.
A busybody at heart, Eric had many varied pastimes and hobbies. He was always content just puttering around in his backyard during the summer months, taking a dip in the pool, watching the Jets game, enjoying a good BBQ on the deck, or playing beer pong with his Brightwater friends. He had a comical love for animals, particularly dolphins, monkeys, birds, and of course his best dog friend Zoe. Eric and his family were also very fortunate to travel often. A memorable RV trip to the Black Hills, a family Disney World vacation and a recent Alaskan cruise shaped some very special family memories.
Eric was a prominent, highly respected and distinguished Paramedic leader both in Manitoba and nationally. A Paramedic since 1992, Eric dedicated countless volunteer hours to help guide and advance the profession of Paramedicine. He was a pillar of professionalism, mentorship, and patient advocacy within the community which touched the lives of so many people. Arguably the most influential leader that has existed in the history of Paramedics in the province of Manitoba, Eric was a fierce and loyal advocate for moving the profession forward, and was still involved in the profession until just a couple of months before his death. More importantly, Eric blessed so many of his Paramedic colleagues with lifelong friendships, and his memory will be cherished deeply by all who knew him.
Throughout his entire life, Eric was a man of integrity. He had a brilliant mind and giving spirit, never once telling someone “no” when they asked for help, advice, or direction. His charismatic personality, love for beer and ice cream and infectious laugh made him one of the most enjoyable people you could ever spend time with, regardless of your age.
Eric fought a decade-long, quiet but courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma, with an abundance of support. A huge and grateful thank you to all the patient and caring professionals at CancerCare Manitoba (where Eric and Cindy were basically celebrities), the staff on GD6, the WRHA palliative home care team, EPIC, and amazing family friends, Michelle, Sandra and Jodi.
A come-and-go Celebration of Eric’s life will be held on June 6, 2024, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue.
Eric was a humble man, and he leaves behind him a loving legacy of helping others. In the spirit of carrying this legacy forward, and in lieu of flowers, Eric’s family and friends would be humbled and grateful for any donations made to the following causes, which were important to Eric and his family.

Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • I had the pleasure of working with Eric, while he was the President of the Paramedics Association of Manitoba. He was a fierce advocate for the profession and a supporter of education. I agree he was arguably the most influential leader for paramedics in Manitoba. Please know that Eric made an impact on all those he worked with and although the profession will miss his contributions, he did achieve lasting positive change. - Posted by: Lesley McGuirk (Co worker) on: Jun 05, 2024

  • Our condolences and prayers go to Cindy and family. - Posted by: Michael & Michelle Riese (High School classmate) on: Jun 05, 2024

  • A wonderful (A+) patient since the beginning of my career! I am saddened to hear of Mr Glass’ passing. My condolences to Cindy and Jenna. Thinking of you during this difficult time. - Posted by: Brittany (Nurse) on: Jun 04, 2024

  • Well Eric has left the place we call Earth! I thought it would be easier than this for me when he did. It is not. We used to laugh about us men never growing up and its true. When the Glass family moved here my first thoughts were "I want to be just like Eric when I grow up" Even though we were well into adulthood and I was a lot older than him. What an honor it was to work with Eric on Ambulance the few times I did when they were almost not an ambulance! He always found some good in the situation. And occasionally some humor too. I shake my head still over how Eric influenced others throughout the years. Especially to some of the "important" folks that made things happen for us all. Eric's accomplishments and wisdom are beyond belief. Eric made things happen and always for others not just himself. I know in my heart he helped his family prepare for this journey too just like he helped me by pretending he needed a ride to CancerCare ...when all he really needed was to see how I was doing! Somehow Eric made others strong just by being Eric. To the Glass family... you are amazingly strong. Please stay that way.Eric would be some unhappy if you didn't!! Love and memories will make it happen.Tom - Posted by: Tom Hanco*ck (Friend) on: Jun 04, 2024

  • I am so sorry to hear of Eric's passing. I had the pleasure of working with Eric when we used to plan Mock Car Crashes for the Manitoba Brain Injury Association. His obituary could not have said it better. Eric was a Man of true integrity, passion, compassion for others. I have not seen Eric in a long while but he has left an imprint on me that will last a lifetime. My prayers and condolences go out to the family. - Posted by: Glen Bergeron (Colleague) on: Jun 04, 2024

  • I met Eric when I was working at the Wpg. Flying Club years ago. My first interaction was a tour of the St. Andrews Tower where he was excited to share what he did with anyone. His excitement was contagious. We took many flights together, even stealing time after work to venture on an ad hoc flight to see how fast a C172 could climb...much to the consternation of the Winnipeg area controllers.Eric's personality was so warm and friendly, it was easy to call him friend. You loss is felt by all who knew him.Dale Allardyce - Posted by: Dale Allardyce (Old Friend) on: Jun 04, 2024
