Flexi Says:
Decimals and fractions both represent quantities that are part of a whole.
Steps to Convert Fraction to Decimal - Method 1
To write fractions that have denominators other than 10, 100, 1000 and so on into decimals, we follow these steps:
Step 1: Obtain the fraction and convert it into an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 10, 100 or 1000. Note that this may not be possible for all denominators.
Step 2: Write the equivalent fraction as a decimal.
To convert @$\begin{align*}\frac{1}{2}\end{align*}@$ into a decimal, you use an equivalent fraction of @$\begin{align*}\frac{1}{2}\end{align*}@$ with a denominator of 10 which is @$\begin{align*}\frac{5}{10}\end{align*}@$.
@$$\begin{align*}\frac{1}{2}=\frac{1 \times 5}{2 \times 5} = \frac{5}{10}\end{align*}@$$
Then, convert the fraction to a decimal. @$\begin{align*}\frac{5}{10}\end{align*}@$ is also five-tenths.
@$$\begin{align*}\frac{5}{10} = 0.5\end{align*}@$$
Adding this to the whole number part which gives us@$\begin{align*}1+0.5=1.5\end{align*}@$
Therefore,
The decimal value of @$\begin{align*}1\frac{1}{2}\end{align*}@$ is 1.5.
Steps to Convert Fraction to Decimal - Method 2
The other way is to use division. Divide 1 by 2. Use zero placeholders if needed.
@$$\begin{align*}\begin{array}{rcl}&&\overset{ \quad \large{0.5}}{2 \overline{ ) {1.0 \;}}}\\&& \phantom{0} \underline{-10} \\&& \phantom{100} \ \ 0\end{array}\end{align*}@$$
Adding this to the whole number part which gives us 1.5
The decimal value of @$\begin{align*}1\frac{1}{2}\end{align*}@$ is 1.5.
