Math Question 7b Wrong Answer (2024)

This answer is incorrect.

The easiest way to work this problem is to convert everything tothe same form. Either convert everything to a fraction or converteverything to a percentage.

Converting everything to a fraction:

  • 12% is converted to .12 to make it a decimal.
  • .12 is converted to 12/100 to change it to a fraction. The fraction is not in lowest terms.
  • Reducing the fraction 12/100 to lowest terms results in the fraction 3/25.
  • You now must compare it to 1/8.
  • To see if the fractions are equal you must change both to the same common denominator

The lowest common denominator for 25 and 8 is 200. In order to change 1/8 so that it has a denominator of 200 both the numerator and denominator are multiplied by 1 in the form 25/25.

  • 1/8 * 25/25 = 25/200
  • To change 3/25 so that it has a denominator of 200 both the numerator and denominator are multiplied by 1 in the form 8/8.
  • 3/25 * 8/8 = 24/200
  • You can see now that 25/200 is not equal to 24/200 therefore the second choice is not correct.

Converting everything to a percentage:

  • To convert 1/8 to a percentage, first you must convert it to a decimal.
  • To convert 1/8 to a decimal, divide the denominator into the numerator. 1 divided by 8 = .125
  • To convert the decimal .125 to a percentage, move the decimal point two places to the right and add the percentage symbol.
  • 12% is greater then 12.5% therefore making the second choice incorrect.

Now let us try another one.

Which statement is correct?

  • 32% > 8/25 (Thirty two percent is greater than eight twenty fifths)
  • 16% = 7/16 (Sixteen percent is equal to seven sixteenths)
  • 3 4/5 = 380% (Three and four fifths is equal to three hundred eighty percent)
  • 3/4 < 60% (Three fourths is less than sixty percent)
