The Advertiser-Gleam from Guntersville, Alabama (2024)

The Advertiser -Gleam October 16, 1959 Volume 77, Number 37 Now they'll hear it A new fire siren has been installed at Arab. It's on the water tower behind the city hall, not as high as the old one but high enough to meet the specifications for maximum carrying power. It's a civil defense type siren. It is shaped like one of these round electric fans that send the air equally in all directions, and that's what the siren is designed to do to the sound. It's supposed to be heard 3 miles away.

Chief Max Clemons says they haven't listened for it from that far away but they do know it can 1 be plainly heard nearly two miles, which is far enough to reach all the firemen. Haden, Dr. Porch and the nurses at Arab Arab-Union Grove road to be paved The road from Union Grove to Arab is one of two paving jobs that the County Board of Revenue has set up as the county's next farm-to-market projects. They hope to build both of them next year. The road, about six miles long, will follow the present dirt road part of the way but in places the route will be straightened and improved. It is one of very few roads coming into Arab that are not already paved.

Tne other project set up is a four -mile road from Mt. Hebron to Douglas. Probate Judge Jess Corbin said the board may decide to let contracts for these instead of having the county's farm-to-market unit do the work. "Our equipment is so worn out," he said, "and it costs so much to try to keep it in operation, that it looks like it may cost less to contract the roads than to build them." The county expects to finish the Hustleville road next summer.
