Mcdonald, Frances Wireless: Officials seek grant Start your weekend early than 700,000 residents, but they are spread around about 437 square miles. Each square mile requires 16 to 20 wireless access points to ensure coverage, said Wally Gramling, Gwinnett County's chief information officer.

"There's a reason why vendors haven't jumped at counties to do it," he said. Georgia's experiments with public wireless networks have largely been confined to the centers of cities, in places like Athens and Marietta. Continued from Jl levels of service. An advertising-supported service would be offered for free. A separate, faster service which would operate at Internet connection speeds faster than dial-up services, but slower than cable connections would be offered for $24.95 a month.

Even faster services would be available at higher prices, according to the preliminary grant proposal. Atlanta also is pursuing pub lie wireless Internet service, as are San Francisco, Philadelphia and other cities. Deploying wireless technology to cover Gwinnett would be more like covering all of Silicon Valley rather than a single city, said Jerry Grasso, a spokesman for Atlanta-based Earthlink which provides wireless service in Philadelphia and Anaheim. "For something like Gwinnett County, it's different, because we're a larger geographic area," Comer said.
